Living Migration – Shaping Democracy – Strengthening Community(ies) Migration shapes neighborhoods and brings with it new questions, experiences, and challenges. Yet migration is only one facet of social diversity, offering fresh perspectives on fundamental questions of belonging and democratic coexistence. We view migration as an opportunity for democracy and as an impetus to learn from one another and to continuously reshape how we live together as a society. Together, we aim to explore how democratic experiences in local migration contexts can be made visible and utilized—as a resource for a vibrant and resilient democracy. We invite scholars from all disciplines and institutions (universities, universities of applied sciences, non-university research institutes, think tanks), practitioners from NGOs, associations, politics, or city administration, as well as representatives of migrant self-organizations to join us.

This roundtable brings together experts to discuss responsibility and accountability in (forced) migration studies. It addresses ethical challenges such as data sensitivity, research ethics, and the safety of both researchers and affected communities. In light of the increasing politicization of migration, the event explores how responsibility can be understood and practiced at individual and institutional levels. A short input will be followed by a moderated panel and open exchange on current dilemmas in displacement and migration research. Hosted by the Bonn Platform for Forced Migration Studies – organized by FIW, BORA, bicc, FFVT and BIM e.V. – the roundtable fosters interdisciplinary dialogue between academia and practice.
