Invitation to the 4th Roundtable Forced Migration Studies on

"Exploring Ethical Questions in Forced Migration Studies"

Wednesday, June 12th, 2024, 11.00-1.00 p.m. (followed by lunch)

Bonner Universitätsforum, Heussallee 18-24, 53113 Bonn

Researchers and non-academic practitioners alike face major ethical challenges in dealing with topics related to migration and refugees, not least due to the increasing politicization and polarization of these issues and the specific vulnerability of refugees. To address the complexity of these challenges in forced migration studies, this roundtable makes use of a multi-perspective approach for joint reflection. Our aim is to delve into ethical dilemmas and discuss existing approaches to conducting research that remains aware of practical implications.

We, an initiative between the University of Bonn, the Bonn Centre for Conflict Studies (bicc), and the Bonner Institut für Migrationsforschung und Interkulturelles Lernen (BIM), cordially invite you to join the discussions! This is an excellent opportunity for exchange and mutual learning for researchers from all disciplines and institutions (universities, universities of applied sciences, non-university research institutions, think tanks), practitioners from NGOs, associations, policy and municipal administration, and representatives of migrant communities.

The starting point of our discussions will depart from the following questions:

What ethical challenges do individuals and institutions face when conducting research on forced migration? What is relevant from the perspective of refugees and non-academic practitioners? How can their experiences and expertise be integrated into (ethical) research design and practice?

You are welcome to introduce your own questions, reflections, and experiences. It is our aim to bring together Bonn’s experts and stakeholders on (forced) migration, and provide a platform for experience exchange, collegial advice, and collaborative learning.
